How to Find Square Root

The square root of a number is a value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. The square root is denoted by the radical symbol \(\sqrt{}\)

Finding the Square Root

Prime Factorization Method

  • Express the number as the product of its prime factors.
  • Pair up identical factors.
  • Take one factor from each pair.
  • Multiply these factors to get the square root.

Estimation Method

  • Make pairs of digits from the right.
  • Find a number whose square is less than or equal to the leftmost pair.
  • Repeat for subsequent pairs.

Most calculators have a square root function (√) that directly provides the square root of a given number.

Examples
