Finding the Square Root
Prime Factorization Method
- Express the number as the product of its prime factors.
- Pair up identical factors.
- Take one factor from each pair.
- Multiply these factors to get the square root.
Estimation Method
- Make pairs of digits from the right.
- Find a number whose square is less than or equal to the leftmost pair.
- Repeat for subsequent pairs.
Using a Calculator
Most calculators have a square root function (√) that directly provides the square root of a given number.
Examples
$$\sqrt{64}=8$$
$$\sqrt{36}=6$$
$$\sqrt{128}=11.3$$
